Down to Earth - Designing for the Endgame

Two of our research projects were integrated in the publication ''Down to Earth'' by George Brugmans Nai010 Publishers.

The book investigate energy transition and water management as exploratory grounds to respond the challenges posed by climate change.

"The Metabolism of Albania: Activating the Potential of the Albanian Territory'' was carried out in collaboration with International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam, 51N4E, Delft University of Technology and The Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency. The project was integrated in the spatial policy of the Albanian government. The maps show the underlying infrastructure systems of food, water, energy in Albania, where key challenges are located, and how they “flow”, bringing into view relations that are unseen in traditional mapping.

The second project investigates the geography of "The Groene Hart'' situated between the cities of Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam and The Hague, the Groene Hart is an iconic National Landscape, characterized by low-lying open grasslands, windmills and dairy production. While in recent history, water levels have been artificially maintained in service of a mostly mono-functional land use, the scenarios developed by the project team explored how the diversity of soil types could be reflected through the land use. This newfound land use range would rightfully make water management the most important driver in the balance between water, soil type and land use.
